| Kennecott Bed & Breakfast: How to get here |
|
Alaska is a big place, and it can be intimidating trying to figure out how to navigate around the various areas of the state. The Kennicott Valley is in the heart of Wrangell St. Elias National Park at the end of a 60 mile gravel road. There are several ways to get to the Kennecott/McCarthy area... Fly: Wrangell Mountain Air offers three daily flights from Chitina, at the edge of the park. They also offer charter flights from Anchorage and other destinations within Alaska. Ellis Air offers scheduled flights to McCarthy from Anchorage or Glennallen on Wednesdays and Fridays. Get delivered with the mail! Rent a car: There are many rental car agencies in Anchorage. One that we have heard good things about is Levi - (907) 563-2279. Bus: Backcountry Connection offers daily van service from Glennallen to McCarthy. Their site also has good information about connecting service to and from Anchorage and other destinations. Should you arrive by road you will realize "the end of the road" is not exactly the end of the road. The public road ends approximately five miles short of Kennecott at a pedestrian bridge which spans the Kennicott River. While this can add a bit of confusion and complication to your journey many people appreciate the pedestrain way of life and lack of traffic which you destination ultimately offers. Here's what you do to complete your journey at "the end of the road": - Complementary parking is offered at the St. Elias Alpine Guides' Visitors Center which is located approximately 1/4 mile before the bridge on the left hand side of the road as you drive in.
